How to apply
Read the criteria & rules below and download your Instrument Specific Excerpts and improvisation backing tracks (if applicable).
Practise your parts, improvised component (if applicable) and prepare for the audition.
When you are ready, record your audition files and save the URL links to your mp3’s somewhere where you can find them. NB make sure these links are shareable otherwise the judges wont be able to assess your submission!
pay your $20 entry fee using the ANJO store and then complete your online registration form, which will require you to add the links to your mp3’s
submit before 11:59pm on March 14, 2022

2022 Audition Criteria & Rules
Auditions are open to Australian Residents between the ages of 18 & 25 (as of Jun 1, 2022)
Auditions close on March 14, 2022 at 11:59pm
Auditions will be ‘blindfold’ judged by the ANJO Youth Big Band Artistic Directors and our 2022 Guest artist. In the case of a split panel, the Guest Artist will have the casting vote.
The 2022 ANJO Youth Big Band will be announced 10am (Sydney Time) on March 21, 2022 via this webpage.
Applications are for the following 17 positions:-
Lead Alto & Soprano Saxophone (improvisation required)
2nd Alto Saxophone (improvisation required)
1st Tenor Saxophone (improvisation required)
2nd Tenor Saxophone (section player only, improvisation optional)
Baritone Saxophone (improvisation required)
Lead Trumpet (section player only, improvisation optional)
Trumpet 2 (improvisation required)
Trumpet 3 (section player only, improvisation optional)
Trumpet 4 (improvisation required)
Lead Trombone (improvisation required)
Trombone 2 (improvisation required)
Trombone 3 (section player only, no solos)
Bass Trombone (section player only, no solos)
Guitar (improvisation required)
Piano (improvisation required)
Double Bass or Electric Bass (improvisation required)
Drum Kit (improvisation required)
all applicants must submit audio links that include the following components:-
the instrument specific excerpts with an audible metronome. Excerpts are available below
the instrument specific excerpts without a metronome. Excerpts are available below
improvising applicants only must also submit an improvised excerpt using one of the backing tracks provided below.
all applicants must pay the $20 audition fee (visit our store page for more details) and complete the application form.
NB Have your excerpts completed and audio links saved before you pay the audition fee.
IMPORTANT applicants must not have any identifying sounds on their audio files e.g. speaking, high heels

NB if you are auditioning for multiple instruments eg Alto Sax & Baritone Sax / Trombone & Bass Trombone we need to hear at least one excerpt on each instrument you are applying for.
Saxophone excerpt (NB play this excerpt, as written, for all types of saxophones. As the excerpt is unaccompanied, it doesn’t matter that its not the same key as the recording)
